Delegates to the second meeting of the Ad hoc Open-ended Working Group on Protected Areas (WGPA 2) convened in plenary throughout the day where they considered conference room papers (CRP) on Review of Implementation of the Programme of Work on Protected Areas (PoWPA) and on Options for Mobilizing, as a Matter of Urgency, Through Different Mechanisms Adequate and Timely Resources for the Implementation of the PoWPA.

Day 2 at the Ad hoc Open-ended Working Group on Protected Areas Meeting

Marcela Aguiñaga, Minister of Environment, Ecuador, presented Ahmed Djoghlaf, CBD Executive Secretary, with a gift for the CBD Museum for Nature and Culture.

Delegates to the second meeting of the Ad hoc Open-ended Working Group on Protected Areas (WGPA 2) convened in plenary throughout the day where they considered the Review of Implementation of the Programme of Work on Protected Areas (PoWPA) and explored options for mobilizing, through different mechanisms, adequate and timely financial resources for the PoWPA. They also heard keynote presentations on innovative financial mechanisms.

Ad hoc Open-ended Working Group on Protected Areas Meeting Begins in Rome

José Antônio Marcondes de Carvalho, WGPA 2 Chair, welcomed delegates to the meeting and underscored the importance of PAs for eradicating poverty, generating income and enhancing ecosystem services and goods.

The second meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group on Protected Areas (WGPA 2) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) opened on Monday, 11 February, in Rome, Italy. Delegates convened in plenary where they heard opening statements and keynote presentations on the implementation of the Programme of Work on Protected Areas (PoWPA), challenges and future prospects.

Second Pew Whale Symposium - A change in climate for whales

The Second Pew Whale Symposium, entitled “A change in climate for whales,” took place at UN University Headquarters in Tokyo, Japan, on 30-31 January 2008.

This symposium, organized by the Pew Environment Group, followed the first Pew Whale Symposium, held in New York in April 2007. It preceded an Intersessional Meeting of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) on the future of the whale conservation regime, in March 2008. The Pew Symposia seek to identify a common way forward to address the current stalemate between proponents of a resumption of commercial whaling and advocates of the continuation of the current moratorium. ABS 6 ends in Geneva, Switzerland

The sixth meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group on Access and Benefit-sharing (ABS) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) was held from 21-25 January 2008 at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland. In a continuation of its fifth meeting, held in October 2007, the Working Group proceeded with the elaboration and negotiation of an international regime on ABS, under the co-chairmanship of Fernando Casas (Colombia) and Timothy Hodges (Canada).
